any suggestions for hosting companies providing windows droplets?

  • Micah commented
    September 11, 2018 20:05

Given that Windows Server 2016 heavily supports Docker and Microsoft has "nano server" and "server core" Docker images should make this somewhat easier than several years ago when this was proposed.

I would also like to add that the PowerShell team at Microsoft has also ported OpenSSH to Windows (still a work in progress though it works pretty reliably on my dev box).

Given these and other recent developments, I believe this could really become a possibility. I would even be willing to pay the "Windows server tax" to run Windows droplets.

However, licensing could be an issue with this as well. There's two ways I can conceive of that may work:
Working with Microsoft regarding Licensing - which those costs could be offset for an additional monthly fee to run a Windows Server image(s).

    OR

Bring Your Own License - users are responsible for purchasing a License to run Windows Server on DO.

    Any thoughts?

In any case I would be interested to see this as option for sure.

  • Anonymous commented
    September 11, 2018 20:05

Your prices are competitive, and I would suggest if you add Windows Server Droplets with $ 5 or 10 addition in your existing prices, you will definitely attract customers.

Imho, I think this is unnecessary. Most of the web services/tools/frameworks run on FreeBSD and GNU/Linux. So not sure how supporting windows will help _significantly_. Please DO focus on world class support for FreeBSD and GNU/Linux and if possible provide a custom ISO option so people can load whatever they want and be done with it!

I'm not sure that this really fills a market need... Azure does this already, and it integrates much better with the windows environment than any other service could (which makes sense, because Azure is run by Microsoft.) Currently, Azure is a little more pricey, but if that $3 scares you, well, for most anything truly mission critical you will find a way to pay it.

My concern on this is users using illegal methods to trick Windows operating systems into thinking they're legitimate, which would cause a lot of problems with DO if Microsoft find out.

But I am game for DO to allow Windows Server droplets.

Would really like to move to Digital Ocean but need Windows Server.

Also with Windows 10 coming out for free for everyone (win7, win8.1 users) developers will be using Windows 10 as a huge developing platform. Only fit that Digital Ocean begins to support Windows.

  • Boyd Badten commented
    September 11, 2018 20:06

Guys.....you're only getting half my business because of your failure on this Windows thing.

Just do it very simply....customer supplies their own license and manages installation process into a blank droplet from a list of ISO's that you supply (with any necessary drivers baked in). Don't fiddle with licensing with MS, I know that's gotta be a hassle--and it unnecessarily complexify's your pricing. Keep it simple.

These guys are stealing my business from you:

    http://www.vultr.com

...because they allow me to install a Windows machine into a blank "droplet" using my own license and ISO. Works like the dickens.

If you continue to be inflexible on this issue, believing that "Linux is the answer for everyone" then you're going to get run over by others who are more flexible.

We run a large infrastructure of servers combining Linux and Windows. We require Windows Server for specific VPN and Exchange needs and use Linux for file hosting, cloud applications and databases. Got 15+ servers we'd be happy to move to Digital Ocean if you can support Windows Server OS. Additional: For the geeks out there, check out joodle.nl for his method of installing Windows on a Kimsufi dedicated server using rescue system. Maybe this is possible with Digital Ocean to avoid complicated licencing problems? Tried it with Linode VPS but unfortunately they use Xen without HT support so it's not possible for Windows to run.

Don't see Windows as an operating system. It's more of a huge Application Server like Java Enterprise Edition. It runs many helpful software applications, very easy to configure and works out of the box with other Microsoft products. A realistic engineer take advantage of whatever is out there.

I just *have* to poke fun at the Windows users: Yeah--I can't wait to see the price of a Windows dropplet. They'll need to create a special new class of droplet just to cover the amount of space needed for the Windows SWAP file. Don't forget the memory and CPU hogs that are SQL and Exchange. Licensing will bump up the cost too... ;)

Didn't KVM fully support for Windows?

you guys can purchase Windows server datacenter license,

As a reference, my previous unmanaged VPS provider offer KVM Windows VPS with a free Windows license. They told me that they use Windows server datacenter license.

I am pretty sure, DigitalOcean as a fast growing VPS provider, you guys can assure Microsoft to give you this such kind of license.

AFAIK, with Windows server datacenter license, there is no complication with the licensing system.

I work with Window machines installed on KVM all the time and haven't had any issues with it. Since DigitalOcean uses KVM, it would be nice to upload my own snapshot and use it. Just to test, I installed KVM on a droplet and then loaded my own image. That worked. But what a lot of overhead. 3 OSs and 2 KVMs! (Windows - KVM - CentOS - DigitalOcean KVM - SomeOS)

Unfortunately you may run into issues running a windows VM inside of Linux because of networking.

Since the virtual machine is already bridged from the hypervisor, bridging from the Windows VM to the Linux VM and then to the hypervisor could be a problem.

I haven't done it, but would be curious to see if any user attempts this and if they have success.
