You can spin up a 20GB virtual server and then do a fast resize to have more RAM/CPU and a small disk so you can have fast snapshots and restores.
I think I would like 4GB-mem/4cores/10GB-disk (don't need much space and wouldn't mind shorter times when dealing with snapshots).
Completely agree to Anonymous. I'd like to add more RAM or disk size without adding one more CPU.
Maybe you could have more pre-defined plans, or at least give option to modify the plans with more RAM and paying an additional value per month. Some hosts, like Linode and DreamHost allow that.
But that's just it. We don't need 16 cores and 16GB of ram, but we do need 300GB of storage.
This makes an inexpensive disk upgrade cost prohibitive and pretty much prevents us from using this service which is unfortunate.
Unfortunately given how physical resources are segmented if we gave users the ability to arbitrarily select CPU, RAM, or HDD independent of each other they would actually end up paying more for this 'custom' plan than using one of the pre-defined plans.
As I'm sure you are a well aware the resources are not equal and are not priced equally, it's cheaper to get more disk, than to get more RAM, which is why we've done our best to cut it up into units and provide the best cost savings to our customers.
