DO Ideas 2

File Level Backups would be great..

Backing up files & folders to a separate location or a location provided by you for backups would be a nice feature to have. It'll save lots of time while restoring files from backup or just for comparing between versions..

We won't be providing this service directly because it would require authentication into the customers servers but we will be providing an API based file storage in the future which could be used as a way to backup files.

What about doing file backups the opposite way? You provide cheaper file storage, users set up backup routines that upload backups to the storage.

Unfortunately we will not be implementing this due to security concerns but you can spin up another server and do rsyncs to backup specific directories/files of your choosing.

Yes, definitely a good Idea. Actually this is probably a big deal breaker at this time. SSD storage is very expensive, and a file-based backup solution would make Digital Ocean stand out!

Unfortunately file level backups would require us having access to your virtual server which would be a huge security concern which is why we have avoided that route.

In regards to backups we would recommend running a separate virtual server and running rsyncs if you want to run backups or you can install the open source BackupPC software which does a great job of archiving entire file systems and providing the ability to restore to a particular point in time, whether it be the entire system or just a particular file/directory.

    Thanks
