DO Ideas 2

allow us to activate the trial at our convenience instead of forcing it.

I too got pulled away and never had a chance to use it. I had to make a new account to try it. The several emails you sent also pushed me away. I only came back because I found you again when searching for cloud hosting.

    Thanks for the feedback Chad!

We definitely did not take the perspective of signing up directly from the community via comment post into enough account since the community was added much later to our product and we already had a very large and defined trial process which was solving a different issue; primarily how to give access to our platform for people to try it out, while at the same time curbing abuse as much as possible. As you can imagine giving someone full root access with just an email and a password invites a lot of unsavory characters.

Your suggestion of "activating" the trial is great and something we are going to look into. We have a lot of things in place to track and monitor abuse so it may take us a little time to get it implemented but it does sound like a great middle ground.

Happy to hear you decided to sign up as well despite some of our nagging emails =]

I think we definitely need to review our correspondence and run through the trial process a few more times ourselves to refine it further and improve the customer experience.

I also sent you a $5 credit for helping us out with your suggestion =]

    Thanks

It's not so much the length of the trail than the timing and how it's activated.

My trial started via signing up from a comment and I was not expecting that. Also, coming from a marketing perspective, I was not expecting all the emails and they kinda pushed me away as well.

In my opinion, I think you would do better and have higher conversion rates if you would allow the new member to activate their free, three hour trail from the members area at their convenience.

I'm not sure what your unsubscribe rate is and you may have already tried this but I would changing the frequency. The first welcome email would be "thanks for signing up" and reminding them that the free trail is available to activate in the members area. Then one more email the next day reminding them about the free trail if they have not activated it and then another after two days from the second and play around until you find the best conversion rate.

Then, after they activate the free trail that would kick off the series of emails you have setup now.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents and BTW... I just funded my account so you can count me in as a conversion!;-)

I love all the control you have and how you can create, change and move plans around so easy and so fast.

If I ever have a rush job I'll be doing it here!

    Thanks,
    Chad

We used to run a much longer trial, actually it was one week long. Unfortunately we ran into a lot of issues with abusive users misusing the trial which is why we had to lower the timeframe that it was active.

If you provide a credit card to authorize your account we actually give you a $1.25 credit automatically which is the equivalent of running a 256MB virtual server for free for nearly week so in essence you can still continue to try out the service without incurring any charges to your credit card for a while.

    Thanks
