DO Ideas 2

I know they cost a fortune, but I would love an Australian server!

Because most of the traffic going to my server would be Australia I would love it if you added one, I wouldn't mind paying extra for it either!

Damn, I'm evaluating options on where to move sites I'm hosting on dedicated server. if there was an Australia presence, I'd be testing and setting up. There is demand for a cloud alternative to Google and Amazon that is Australian-based. I'm sure it would be a wise investment. Perhaps in a couple years time, I'll return and see.

Using AWS and GCP as references, it appear that Tokyo has the best average latency to all parts of Asia, including Sydney (dont ask me why, Singapore to Sydney seems to be slower instead).

Currently the Singapore servers are passing teamspeak server testing beautifully.

Around the 100ms ping back to ADL via 4G networks Optus and Telstra and similar on some of the free internet offerings.

    Can be happy with that.

Australia as we all know is very cost prohibitive for a lot of things when really it shouldn't be.

Even the NBN is dismal compared to what other countries have had for years.

500Mbps down remains a Conrovian pipe dream let alone the upstream.

We live in hope and pay through the nose in the mean time.

    So much for competition.

As far as I know, most AU startup projects looking for a government funds need to use only AU datacenters if any. I think DigitalOcean would make the difference between those currently available (price vs. capacity + CPU + bandwidth).

Working on a project now that could see me spin up potentially 20 servers in the next year. They will probably be in Singapore if no Australian Datacenter is available. I would love an Australian Datacenter as ping times from here are genenerally awful to both Singapore and the west coast of the U.S.

I'm currently an NZ user having servers spun up in the San Fransisco data center and generally the speed is good. I know that the closest new data center location for us here in NZ would be either Melbourne or Sydney, Australia. If this happens then Digital Ocean becomes my top hosting location for everything and anything I'd need. Looking forward to some more good news regarding this!

    September 11, 2018 19:12

    @Bob Blanchett

I work with Digital Ocean, Vultr and RamNode. While I do personally prefer Digital Ocean over the others, I've found them all more than adequate for spinning up instances quickly and installing the required software. From a command-line standpoint, all are virtually identical. There are minor package-set differences (I use Ubuntu across all three), but not enough to worry about.

I would encourage you to proceed with Vultr now (you'll be happy), and then bring Digital Ocean into the fold once they've launched in that region.

  • Ted Wood commented
    September 11, 2018 19:12

My understanding is that DO maintains full top-to-bottom control over the entire network and architectural stack... hardware and software that is the "Digital Ocean". Therefore, is it not a straightforward process of installing the spec'd hardware, loading up the latest software, and then throwing the "on" switch? If you've hired your engineers nearly two months ago, why is this not yet ready to go in Australia? Are there other complications? Extensive testing underway? Enquiring mind(s) want to know.

The issue with the Patriot Act is that it applies to US companies regardless of the physical location of their hardware. The fact the server is hosted outside of the US will do nothing to stop US authorities obtaining the data should they feel they want it.

But I would love to see server in either AU or NZ soon. I'm running Asterisk (FreePBX) on a droplet, and while it works pretty well, the lower the latency the better.

@Molsey Unfortunately that doesn't help much, there are plenty good hosts who offer in Singapore, Japan. Running a serious website in Australia you really can't afford having it elsewhere, considering both response time and locality of the servers.

Lets keep voting and hope that you soon see the value of opening up in Australia. I really think that you could chock the market here. I see slowly things are happening, but the opportunity is still here. Its a great opportunity, really just check it out.

As an aside addressing some of our paranoid commenters, let me assure DO that locality, latency and geographical/jurisdictional compliance are what our commercial customers are talking about. PRISM isn't even on the radar.

Besides, local servers solve two issues in this tinfoil corner case: 1. No traffic traverses the submarine interface where mass collection occurs. 2. Local storage is then subject to case based open judge led warrant search and seizure regime. Much more satisfactory, less political than JP or ASEAN jurisdictions.

  • Bob Blanchett commented
    September 11, 2018 19:12

We recently onshored our servers from US to Australia as a 1. legislative requirement some of our customers have compliance issues. 2. Marketing feature (see 1.) 3. Link latency issues

    AMZN prices are murder.

Digital Ocean's provisioning is excellent and given most local non AMZN "cloud" providers spin up times are glacially slow: even "elastic" ones take hours to days - if you request over the weekend (I tested out crucial paradigm deliberately) many still provision manually.

Digital ocean would clean up in Australia and sweep the field.
