Currently there is no way to actually connect to a droplet even if you know the ID , If IP address is returned automatic creation and maintenance would be easier.

If you process a create the IP takes a while to get assigned so if you view the droplet right after a create event it may not appear, once the droplet is finished creating it will be there, which is most likely what you encountered.

The ip_address is returned for both the full listing of droplets and the specific show of a droplet via the API call.
