    Admin Response

Paul, Could you provide more information on what you would like to do with an editable SOA record? Is there anything outside of custom TTL (being tracked here http://digitalocean.uservoice.com/forums/136585-digitalocean/suggestions/3592508-dns-configurable-setting-to-raise-and-lower-ttl-v) or being able to use vanity name servers?

+1, your service is unusable for my use case, (need much lower refresh interval/retry interval/expiry period/negative TTL)

AWS Route53 has this capability, and all those values are easily editable.

    ns-1262.awsdns-29.org. awsdns-hostmaster.amazon.com. 1 60 30 7200 60

2018 and still unable to set an SOA for a subdomain. 5 years after this was opened, it's pretty evident that providing 1st class support for bare minimum features isn't a priority for DigitalOcean.

Is there any ETA on this feature? Trying vanity nameservers without the ability to change the SOA record is not how I want to do this.

When we setup vanity (custom) name servers we need to change our SOA record to reflect the first (vanity) name server. It would also be helpful to change the email address to a valid one.

Vanity DNS domains report an error because of the SOA. According to mxtoolbox.com "Primary Name Server Not Listed At Parent"

I would like to edit the source host so I can setup vanity domain name for dns and not get the error message of "Primary Name Server Not Listed At Parent" because you force it to be ns1.digitalocean.com when checking my setup using mxtoolbox.com

To get an SSL cert from StartSSL you need to validate your domain and only option is by email, specified in SOA. So currently - you need to have all mail infrastructure in place, just to get a free SSL.

functionality for changing SOA fields per domain:
    - hostmaster email address
    - primary nameserver hostname
    - TTL value

DigitalOcean API mainly wrapping CloudFlare API which have build-in support for all of above mentioned options, should be not big effort for implement/provide same functionality to all
DigitalOcean customers to gain client satisfaction in the term of DNS services.

    Thank you.

Changing TTLs and getting rid of 'ns1.digitalocean.com.' in my SOA records would be greatly appreciated. And being able to alter the contact address would be great for those domains, where I don't have/need an MX record, so I can just plug in my standard hostmaster email.

It's great that we would have this features for vanity DNS because most dns checker shows all vanity dns via DO as unauthorized.

TTL is not the only problem.

The ticket #450712 is not resolved for more than 6 months. It is about incorrect SOA record when renaming NS records (this called "vanity name servers") after you DNS upgrade.

Editable SOA can eliminate this problem.

And by default SOA record created with contact hostmaster.domain.tld. I don't wanna to configure mail for each domain I own.

But the best solution will be a text zone editor in BIND format.

Hi DIgital Ocean users, please vote for this functionality.
Not just an ability to change the "COntact" email address, but also "TTL", "Primary name server" and all SOA Record for complete vanity :)

When you'll want to use Vanity Name servers (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-create-vanity-or-branded-nameservers-with-digitalocean-cloud-servers), it would be great to use custom MNAME/name-server instead of ns1.digitalocean.com.

Please make the last SOA field separately configurable - don't just fill it with the default TTL. Once upon a time, that field was for default TTL (among other things). With modern usage, it's the NXDomain TTL, and it is quite handy to be able to set this separate from the default TTL. Linode doesn't have this right yet, so it's your chance to get ahead of them on *something*.
