Auto-Backup & Snapshots

I can see changing to charging for auto-backup capability. I'd pay for it, even though its free now. But the snapshot capability, I'd be mad if I had to pay for my snapshots (even though its storage cost). If I could have 1 free snapshot per month, and a total of 1 of my snapshots were free, and any *additional* snapshots cost then I could see that and would pay for that. but to have to pay for a single snapshot, that was the baseline of my current VM, not so sure I'd be happy at that!

    Hi David,

You basically hit the nail on the head, in that there is a real storage cost involved with storing snapshots and backups. We can't just store one copy, we have to store multiple, and also off-site storage which has to be through a third party. When you multiply this out by thousands of customers and thousands of VMs, what at first appears to be a negligible cost quickly begins to add up, especially since customers are dependent on the snapshots and backups always being available and redundant in case any particular copy of it goes missing.

We will certainly take your suggestion of offering one snapshot free of charge as it can be used as a great way to create an initial config for the most commonly deployed server, but on the bright side a single snapshot of a 512MB virtual server would only cost $0.40 cents.
