Sadly, I don't see DigitalOcean as an Amazon killer. I don't see anyone right who can compete with the range of cloud support that Amazon offers.

I am currently building an application on AWS. My application consists of one or more Tomcat servers (Amazon provides load balancers) running on Linux. I am using Postgres and probably Riak. Eventually I expect that I will migrate from my stand along Postgres instance to an Amazon Postgres RDS instance. RDS looks like it will provide a more robust Postgres environment.

I'm also using Amazon DNS and Amazon's email service (SES). Amazon also has multiple US zones (West Coast, Oregon, Northern Virginia).

Unfortunately, when it comes to supporting a complex application, Amazon is the only choice right now. I'd like to see an alternative, since Amazon monopoly and world domination may become problematic. Also, figuring out how to use Amazon can be no small task. Even with these problems, Amazon looks like the lowest risk alternative.
