Provide better console access

Hi:

We were configuring our server and tweaking some system settings. Looks like we made some mistake and when we rebooted, totally lost access to the VPS.

The console access was web based and had issues and we were not able to login.

After struggling for 3 days, Support suggested to destroy the droplet and start from scratch. We can do it because we have not yet started full fledged, but if this were a production server, it would have been disastrous.

The main issue is that Console access

1. Had browser issues.
2. Is useless to get into single user mode.

If we had been able to get into single user mode on our own, we could have solved the problem in 5 minutes and would not have bothered Support.

And it is not that this technology does not exist. We could do it in our earlier providers like Slicehost/Linode.

Therefore would suggest providing console access (may be through SSH and not web) where user themselves can boot into Single user mode and restore the server.

Thanks.

Thank you for the web console service. In my mind the web console is a huge reason to use Digital Ocean, it's just a shame -- as Alice says -- that it doesn't support scrolling, or sizing, or being popped out as a separate window, which would make it far more useful. (I realize there are other alternatives such as putty etc but i'm not talking about that here, I'm talking about the web console service.) You've done so much work on it, it would just be nice to see it be just that little more easier to use.

I'd use the web console a lot more if it just supported scrolling, that is really the only request I can add on to this one.

We've done several rolling updates to the console in the past month including resolving any browser issues which were mostly on firefox and related to SSL pass throughs which have been fixed up.

There is a secondary request here which is regarding a single-user mode or a recovery mode where we would boot a rescue ISO where you can then use the console to mount your OS's FS and do any updates as necessary which we are putting together and hope to launch soon.

Since there is a separate request for that we will mark this one as completed to return your votes to you and you can upvote the recovery ISO request instead.

    Thanks

Hi, actually this isn't that difficult. All you need to do is SSH in from your own console. Find out the IP address of your droplet then in your console type:

    ssh root@your_ip_address

    Easy.

+3 for console access over ssh similar to Linode's Lish

Having this problem right now, I am used to the reliability of Linode's web console also with copy paste. This is a must before I switch to another provider, I'll wait till they release a decent console access system.

I'd love to see something similar to what linode does with console access over ssh. Means you can copy/paste and really just a pleasure to use. Is that something you guys are looking at? I'd give this 3 votes but I'm out of votes :).
