Stop the Bait and Switch with Trial Accounts! I'm staying with Linode, they don't pull that crap.
We've disabled our trial accounts a while back so everyone actually runs from the same hardware and the same was true when we had trials, they weren't segmented to specific or different hypervisors.
If you ran into an issue with performance please open a ticket it may be that there's an issue we need to look into on the hypervisor that we can resolve for you or perhaps try another droplet to see if its improved.
I am not the original poster of this thread, but I think I understand the cause for concern.
My first experience with a Digital Ocean VPS was with a free web-terminal demo. I ran some CPU intensive calculations and they ran very fast. I then signed up for an instance, ran the same calculations, and they ran oh so slowly. Of course, sharing is a factor, but I think the original poster's point is that the free demos give a distorted impression of the performance to actually be had once one signs up.
To solve this, all marketing demos should run on a VPS provisioned from the $5/month pool on the same shared hardward with the same amount of sharing. And marketing will tell you this is a bad idea; best foot forward, no one notices or cares, that sort of thing. But we do notice....
We've updated all of the messaging on the front page, ad copies, and inside our CP to reflect our move away from Free Trials, sorry about the confusion we were in the midst of launching our newest DC: San Francisco and it caused a backlog of work in several areas.
You won't be notified about changes to this idea.
