    Admin Response

Today we are extremely excited to announce the availability of CoreOS as a distro. With the release of CoreOS there are several behind the scenes updates which we implemented with this distro first. Those are a new metadata service and cloudinit support. Initially this is only for CoreOS and we'll be collecting feedback from customers for any bugs that we may have missed during our own internal testing and with the CoreOS dev team and then move toward making the metadata service a publicly consumable service for any deploys in the future. This is tracking an Alpha release of CoreOS and not Stable, and that is specifically because of some of the changes that the CoreOS team made to support how we deploy images, eventually those will be merged into Stable, so outside of those updates for support of DO the rest is based off of the Stable branch. We also have a blog post up with details on the announcement along with a few helpful links to our community tutorials to help customers get started with CoreOS on DO. https://www.digitalocean.com/company/blog/coreos-now-available-on-digitalocean/ https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorial_series/getting-started-with-coreos-2 And certainly not last, but a huge thanks to the CoreOS dev team which provided a tremendous amount of support and help to getting CoreOS supported on DO. Thanks!

To the many of you asking for Deis on Digital Ocean... Thanks to some great work by Dr. Stefan Schimanski on https://github.com/deis/deis/pull/1217, you can now use `kexec` as a workaround to use Deis/CoreOS on Digital Ocean. Please keep in mind it is not officially supported yet (see Moisey's note above). In the meantime, let us know if you have any issues or open a PR if you have improvements!

RE: deis: they're actually switching to CoreOS: https://github.com/opdemand/deis/blob/master/MIGRATING.md which is why I'm urging DO to implemement support. We're planning to run our production stack on deis as soon as it's production ready. We were also planning to do this on DO, but deis' move might make us switch to Amazon keep using Rackspace.

  • David Conner commented
    September 11, 2018 18:14

Please Please Please add CORE-OS support! This is seriously the sh!t right now. Flynn isn't ready. Deis doesn't do it right. Docker needs configuration management and CoreOS is THE best way to do it. I can't afford Rackspace or Amazon, but this would be badass.

It looks like this feature may be blocked by / dependent on 2 other features that are in the pipeline:

    1) Using a custom image
    http://digitalocean.uservoice.com/forums/136585-digitalocean/suggestions/3276477-allow-custom-images

    2) Using the droplet's own bootloader (for automatic updates on reboot) http://digitalocean.uservoice.com/forums/136585-digitalocean/suggestions/2814988-give-option-to-use-the-droplet-s-own-bootloader

These are both 'Started'. Does that mean we can consider this feature 'Planned' now? If so, any rough idea on when these two features will be in place?

This is a +3... I believe you know that your (early) Dokku base image support validated the idea that Docker is the future, and allowed many companies to adopt a Docker deployment workflow. I also think you know what CoreOS brings to the business. I would like to hear some news on this matter, at least cast us some light on the progress (as mentioned on the Twitter profile).

    Thanks for the tip, stuart-warren.

This "tyranny of the majority" has its merits, but also severe limitations. For example, if the majority of users (numbers-wise) are "hobbyists", then there will be fewer votes given for features that would be important for business users. And a few business accounts could bring in (a lot) more money than an equal number of hobbyist accounts.

  • stuart-warren commented

Looks like DO have already started work on allowing any custom image.

That suggestion has a lot more votes, so that is clearly how they prioritize what they work on.

This was proposed many months ago. Rackspace and AWS support CoreOS, one because of their larger freedom to build ec2 instances, the other because of OpenStack. With CoreOS capability of updating to the last version, you don't even need to keep a 100% updated version on file and let people update on the first boot. We currently run some servers with you and with our initial production deployment CoreOS is a must. We have decided to move back to AWS all of our business. I'd prefer not to do that, but after more than 6 months without progress, I'm not sure what your position on this new game changing linux flavor is...
