DO Ideas 2

I wouldn't use your service if it was FREE.

After a foray into your IRC channel, I wouldn't use your service if it was FREE. Apparently your company is run by snarky hipsters. Perhaps someone from your company should MOD the IRC channel. It's run by rude and sophomoric children. Butt servers? Really?

    Admin Response

Each social channel has its own social norms. There are channels where we have full control such as our twitter, facebook, instagram, and other channels where we exercise less. IRC in particular has been around for decades and has its own culture. It is one where people can often be snarky, rude, and often will say RTFM when someone asks a question. We do moderate the channel to an extent, however, that is mostly limited to direct attacks between users. We do provide a warning for users logging in through our homepage on the community that says the channel is a bit unmoderated. Censoring or providing a large amount of moderation isn't something that we are looking to enforce but if anyone feels that the conversation has drastically degraded please message one of the ops with the offending user and a copy and paste of the conversation. Thanks, Moisey

I agree with the original poster. Unfortunately, this is true for most IRC channels. Try the Linode channel. They wont waste time calling you an idiot for asking some question. Happens to me quite often on DO channels. Its an irony i pay for using their service. Well, since its the regulars who call you an idiot, you can speak up either. And yes, the best part, if you are from India, you know nothing, we just got rid of polio, we have hunger issues, these are what is discusssed instead of answering people;s questions. Also, Africa is full of disease. Yes, heard that one too. They should learn some moderation from the Ubuntu channels when the mods focus on keeping the channel on topic.

Well... any company's official channel (including but not limit to IRC, forums etc.) should be moderated.

Just a few examples... Cisco moderates their forum, Apple too, Microsoft too, Dell too, and still every one is happy there even if they post about their problems... Moderating is their way to manage the community and keep it fun and clean of rude (or read it as stupid and frustrated) people that could turn a very nice chat and stay into a awful experience.

But in any way, you shouldn't let an (obviously) unmanaged IRC channel influence your opinion about a company without trying it's services.

Poking an already irritated customer with a more or less sophmoric response like "I wouldn't use your product either" isn't the best stewardship.

One might hope it would be obvious that IRC channels aren't owned by the company, but it is clear this poster did not. Getting snarky with him for being uneducated or ill informed isn't a reasonable response at all, even if you don't work here.

Measuring a man (or business) by the company he keeps is quite common. Whether you agree with it or not, whether you do that yourself or not, is immaterial. You should know and understand that is how most people in the world work.

A community of children that don't understand basic professionalism doesn't reflect well on the company. Volunteer or not, a reasonable person would understand that unprofessional people hanging about reflects poorly and will cost them business

Most of the people answering questions in the IRC channel are volunteers. Are you that much of a control freak that you want to censor volunteers? I totally concede that "rude and sophomoric" comments are inappropriate, say, in a private support ticket... but a public IRC channel that relies on the "community" helping each other out? Really?

If you weren't aware, freenode doesn't belong to Digital Ocean. It's a place for channels of open source projects and social things. Some companies use those channels as unofficial community support.

Basically, you walked into a Digital Ocean Anonymous meeting and some of our oceanographers weren't feeling as serious as you might've liked.

If you want a real representation of the actual company, try contacting the company. The community is one that polices itself and the channel does have a bias towards different personalities that you might've not fit.

Personally, I wouldn't use a service you'd host if the state of the unofficial IRC channel is what stops you from using a hosting service.

It was a joke. There is a chrome plugin to replace all occurences of 'cloud' with 'butt'. Hence 'cloud servers' --> 'butt servers'.

I am not staff. I am a customer and I hang out in their IRC channel.

While I agree with the general sentiment, anyone who doesn't understand the "Butt" thing probably hasn't been working in IT recently...
